In 2007 ~ I purchased this handkerchief at an estate sale. It was .25 cents- (REALLY!) It retained its original tag, and was signed Mary Blair. Of course I knew several textile designers such as Tammis Keefe, Pat Prichard, Carl Tait, and of course Tom Lamb. I had never heard of Mary Blair-- So I listed the "cute" handkerchief on eBay.
Over night it had over 20 watchers~ I was shocked and couldn't understand the interest in this handkerchief-- So.... I Googled Mary Blair- and this is what I found
Mary Blair (October 21, 1911 – July 26, 1978), born Mary Robinson, was an American artist best remembered today for work done for The Walt Disney Company. Blair produced striking concept art for such films as Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, Song of the South and Cinderella. Her style also lives on through the character designs for the Disney attraction It's a Small World, as well as an enormous mosaic inside Disney's Contemporary Resort. Several of her illustrated children's books from the 1950s have never been out of print, such as I Can Fly by Ruth Krauss. Blair was honored as a Disney Legend in 1991, one of the first women to be given the honor.
Needless to say I was surprised and pretty thrilled about this great find for .25 cents-- I watched the interest climb during the week as the auction progressed. Well-- My auction ended on Sunday and this "cute" handkerchief sold for $105.00! I am thrilled to offer another this week on eBay! It will be fun to watch how well this wonderful find does~~
